Scottish Fold History

In 1961 the first known Scottish Fold, Susie, was discovered by a farmer named McCrae on his farm in Perthshire, near Coupar Angus, NW of Dundee, in the Tayside Region of Scotland.  A couple named William and Mary Ross heard about Susie and became interested. The Rosses asked the McCraes if they could have one of Susie's kittens which had inherited her unique folded ears. That kitten given to the Rosses, a solid white female named Snooks, became the foundation for a new breed. All Scottish Folds existing today can trace their lineage back to Susie and Snooks.

Susie, the first known Scottish Fold

The Rosses were given Snooks in 1963. Snooks later conceived her first litter by an unnamed red tabby male.  In this first litter there was one folded kitten, a white male they named "Snowball."  When old enough, Snowball was bred to a white British Shorthair, Lady May, and litter of five fold-eared kittens was produced.

Snooks' second litter was by a blue British Shorthaired cat, Ryelands Regal Gent.

In 1969, Denisla Hester and Denisla Hector were the fold-eared kittens born to Snooks in this litter.

When the Rosses decided to name their cattery in order to register kittens of this new "breed" they chose "Denisla" after the Den and Isla rivers near their home.

This was about 1966.  They also contacted a geneticist in order to properly start a breeding program and the breed they had been calling "Lops" was renamed "Scottish Fold."
